There are many festivals and celebrations in Rio. Since a large portion of Rio de Janeiro's population is Catholic, most of their holidays or religious.
National Holiday Dates: Jan 1- New Year's Day Feb 21- Carnival (date changes every year) Apr 4- Easter (date changes every year) Apr 21- Tiradentes' day May 1- Labor Day Jun 7- Corpus Christi (date changes every year) Sep 7- Independence Day Oct 12- Patron Saint of Brazil and Children's day Nov 2- Day of the Dead Nov 15- Republic Day Dec 25- Christmas New Years New Years Eve is the next biggest celebration after The Carnival. It is usually celebration on Copacabana Beach. About 1 million people go to the beach that night (and day) to enjoy music/concerts, games, fireworks, etc. People usually wear all white because it means to ensure good luck through the year. The celebration happens all over, at the beach, in the city, etc. For example there are many parties in the city. They are known for their luxurious and expensive prices. Another beach that particularly attracts the younger crowd is Barra da Tijuca. Carnival The biggest celebration in Rio de Janeiro specifically is Carnival. It is a 4-day long celebration and lead to Fat Tuesday when it ends. Fat Tuesday is also the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. Everyone joins in the fun parties, concerts, and parade competitions between different Samba schools in the area. It is the most exciting and expected holiday by native. They say that the year only begins after Carnival. The official holiday only last 4 days but the celebration last more than 10 days. There are many people dancing and singing within the streets of the city. The most famous ones are "Simpatia e quase Amor", "Banda de lpanema", "Monobloco", "Bloa Preta" and "Suvaco de Crsto". It is one of the most enchanting festivals on the plant. |
